EMOP as a leadership/followership guide: #4 / 5 - Time
Look back to see how your organisation is developing.
Collecting data today about your organisation can give you valuable information about how your organisation is currently faring.
Examining that data, relative to data from the past, can give you valuable information about how your organisation is developing.
With regard to organisational behaviour, this could be various developments, such as developments in employee satisfaction, organisational dynamics, including group interaction or developments in the organisation’s culture..
- If yesterday’s figures are worse than today’s, then the organisation seems to be improving.
- If yesterday’s figures are better than today’s, then the organisation seems to be slipping.
Extrapolating the path from where you were to where you are, can even give you a sense of where you are going in the future.
Comparing previous data to current data can help you see the effects of the events and interventions that took place in between those measurements.
This way, looking back also helps you evaluate past policies, interventions and events and it help you learn to improve your organisation’s effectiveness and efficiency.
